EMBODYING EASTER: Practicing Resurrection
“Woman at the Well”
A Women’s Art & Movement Retreat Evening
at Queen Anne Christian Church, 1316 3rd Ave W, Seattle, WA
with Betsey Beckman, MM and Christine Valters Paintner, PhD
Christ offered the gift of resurrection to every woman he met. As women today, can we embrace this gift in our daily practice? Gather with women this Easter season to explore stories of Christ’s transformative power as imparted to the women he encountered. Celebrate the arts as our own tools for unearthing creativity, discovery possibility, encountering liberation and embodying resurrection.

WHAT IS BLOSSOMING WITHIN YOU?
“For see, the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of pruning the vines has come, and the song of the dove is heard in our land.” –Song of Songs 2:11-12. Come join us for a day of renewal, to reflect on the season of spring and poetry–using contemplative prayer, sharing, and ritual to explore our own places of blossoming and new growth, and to listen deeply for where God may invite us to risk blooming. No art experience necessary.

PRAYING WITH THE ELEMENTS
Earth, water, air, and fire are the four primal elements in nature and provide the template for our day of retreat together. Taking our cues from St. Francis and the Celtic tradition, we will explore our relationship to each of the elements and ask what gifts and questions they offer to us. In addition we will notice how becoming more aware of them grounds us more deeply in God’s creation. Our time will include ritual, reflective journaling, contemplative prayer, poetry, and sharing.
St. Placid Priory Spirituality Center in Lacey, WA — $60

CONTEMPLATIVE ART & MOVEMENT RETREAT:
An Exploration of Monastic Rhythms Through Art & Movement
with Roy DeLeon, OblSB and Christine Valters Paintner, PhD, OblSB
at St. Andrew’s Retreat House on the Hood Canal
Do you long to uncover a contemplative rhythm to nourish your creative process?
Are you drawn to explore ways that the monastic tradition can feed your everyday life?
Do you want a retreat experience of guided meditation, movement, and creative expression?
Our retreat schedule will be guided by the tradition of praying the Hours. We will pause four times each day to pray the hours through movement. Roy will lead us in embodying the Psalms through “blessed movements,” a gentle series of movement-based prayers inspired by yoga postures.
In between, Christine will gently guide you in lectio divina and a combination of poetry writing and collage/mixed media art exercises to tap into your inner wisdom and longings. We’ll take our artistic inspiration from the “Book of Hours,” a monastic book of prayer filled with art to illuminate its words, and the “Book of Creation” which will surround us on the Hood Canal. During the retreat you’ll create a simple accordion-style book filled with your own wisdom and art to be used for future inspiration and meditation.
In this retreat we’ll immerse ourselves in a contemplative rhythm rooted in the monastic tradition as a way to nurture our creativity. We will have time for silence, for movement prayer, and for art-making. Together we will explore the rhythm of stillness and creating, and how each nourishes the other. We will pause throughout the day to notice what season we find ourselves in and what qualities the time of day offers to our creative process.
All levels welcome!
